Financialunderstanding and skills are vital tools for managers and business leaders atall levels of an organisation. They allow you to make better decisions: toanalyse and optimise the financial health of an organisation, allocateresources effectively, identify investment and business opportunities, andunderstand the impact decisions will have on your bottom line.This course introduces you to the world ofmodern finance, especially to the financial operations of business. It coversthe concepts of time value of money, asset valuation, risk and return paradigm,capital budgeting, financing, and payout decisions, and derivatives. Upon completion,students will be able to value bonds and stocks, estimate asset returnsaccording to their risk characteristics, choose projects that maximizeshareholder's wealth using a wide range of analytical tools. They will alsodevelop a good understanding on how firms finance their capital expenditure ontheir investment and the levels of dividends and other payouts for theirshareholders. Finally, students will gain a basic understanding on derivativessuch as options and futures, and apply them for sound risk managementpractices.
Iwill be the lead professor in this course. A little bit about myself—I’ve beenteaching corporate finance at the executive level since 2006. And since thesame year, I have also been a faculty [member] at Syracuse University. I havetaught at other schools, such as University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands andBocconi University in Milan, Italy. My areas of teaching and research expertiseare corporate finance, specifically corporate restructuring and corporategovernance, and real estate finance, specifically commercial real estatepricing, real estate investment trusts, and real estate operations. I havepresented my research at multiple leading international conferences, and I havepublished my research in multiple leading finance and real estate journals.Before taking an academic position, I worked in management consulting, and Iworked there as a consultant.
The objective of this course is to provide the students with the basic analytical toolsrequired to make value creating financial decisions. The students will beprovided with an introduction to theoretical foundations and practicalapplications in financial decision-making. Topics covered in thecourse include analysis of financial and operating performance,assessment of financial health, financial planning, working capital and growthmanagement, the time value of money, risk- return trade-off, valuation of financial and real assets, investment, funding and distributiondecisions in the context of non-financial firms.
